Meet Dr. Hawes
Dr. Michael J. Hawes graduated summa cum laude from the University of Notre Dame and then with honors from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. Postgraduate training in medicine/surgery, ophthalmology, and ophthalmic plastic surgery was completed at the University of Colorado and the University of Wisconsin. He has been in private practice in Denver since 1980. Dr. Hawes currently serves as Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He has taught and supervised postgraduate physicians in training for more than twenty
five years, and currently is one of the preceptors of an oculo-facial plastic
surgery fellowship training program coordinated by the University of
Colorado Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Hawes is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). He is a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS - www.asoprs.org), which is the leading organization of oculoplastic surgeons in the United States and Canada. He served as President of this
500 member group in 1998. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was President of the Colorado Ophthalmological Society and served more than 10 years as a Committee member and Director of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company
(OMIC), the largest and most successful insurance carrier for ophthalmologists
in the USA. He reviewed manuscripts for the scientific journal Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as a member of the Editorial Board for 13
years, and continues to review submissions to the journal from oculoplastic surgeons around the world.

Dr.
Hawes was named as one of Denver's best blepharoplasty surgeons in 5280
magazine.
Dr. Hawes has authored over 30 scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, and has been an invited speaker at national ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery meetings. He has operated on members of the Denver Broncos football team and the Colorado Avalanche hockey team to repair injuries.
He often sees patients who have been to many other doctors but need another
opinion or additional help.
